Many people go out and buy new shoes before their first class. I hope to stop them from purchasing the all to common running shoe. I have found that the best shoes to workout in is Skateboarding shoes. Why?? Because they have flat bottoms, grip the ground nicely, have a lot of support all around the shoe (side walls especially), and are not squishy. I prefer the Nike SB “Paul Rodriguez II” model. Unless I am doing a 5k run, I wear these shoes for any type of exercise. These shoes are fine for short sprints, and are everything you would want in heavy lifts.
Even though I have weightlifting shoes, I still prefer wearing my nikes when weight lifting. If you have a pair of running shoes you should keep those in your gym bag in case we do a long run, but most the exercises that take place in this gym are way beyond those weak shoes.
